In the afternoon of June 15, 2017, a report entitled “Does foreign direct investment stimulate new firm creation? In search of spillovers through industrial and geographical linkages ” was given by Sun Laixiang in the liberal arts building room for Innovation Conference B215, who was the professor of Geography Department of economics University of Maryland School of behavioral and Social Sciences .The lecture was chaired by Professor Tian Lihui of the Financial Development Research Institute. Young teachers and graduate students from our institute attended the lecture.
At the beginning of the report, Professor Tian first gave Professor Sun Laixiang a warm welcome, and Professor Sun Laixiang are briefly introduced and reviewed, the cooperation experience in academic research. Professor Sun is now a professor of geography and economics at the University of Maryland School of behavioral and Social Sciences, a member of the British Academy of Social Sciences and a professor of Finance and management at the Asian African College of University of London. Professor Sun has been director of the Department of Finance and management of University of London, Professor of geography and natural resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Guanghua School of Management, Peking University.
Subsequently, Professor Sun introduced the purpose of the study, the theoretical background, the research design, the empirical results, the conclusions and the inspiration. Prof. sun made use of 2000-2004 years and 234 regional business survey data in Korea, and found that foreign direct investment can promote the establishment of new enterprises. The spillover effect, this effect from industry and space at the same time, this effect is not linear, presents an inverted U curve of foreign direct investment in new industries and spatial spillover effects. In the course of the lecture, Professor Sun also shared his experience in doing research.
The lecture lasted more than two hours, Professor Tian made a brief comment on the lecture, young teachers in our college and postgraduate exchanged the experience of research on measuring the variables, how to deal with the effective use of time with Sun Laixiang professor. The lecture was successfully completed in a warm applause.
